On a Reddit forum, a flight attendant with five years of experience answered passengers’ questions about how to avoid jet lag on long-haul flights.

A flight attendant answered passengers’ questions on the Reddit TravelHacks forum, who were looking for tips to reduce the effects of jet lag during long flights.

Jet lag is a feeling of tiredness caused by a large time zone difference between the departure and destination locations. According to the Mayo Clinic, jet lag can cause “fatigue during the day, discomfort, and difficulty noticing stomach problems.”

One passenger asked how people deal with jet lag. “I saw online that some people try to adjust their sleep schedules before the trip, expose themselves to sunlight, and use melatonin supplements,” they shared.

A flight attendant with five years of experience responded to the passenger’s questions.

“If the sun is shining, stay awake; if it’s dark, go to sleep. If there’s light outside the window, stay awake. If it’s dark, go to sleep,” they advised.

They also recommended drinking plenty of water to prevent the skin from drying out. “If it’s daytime at your destination, stay awake.” If the passenger is very tired, they can take a nap, “but not for more than an hour.”

“I’ve tried everything, from melatonin to lavender, and eventually realized that nothing works better than the basics: ‘follow the sun,’” they confessed.
