Dangerous TikTok 'travel hack' puts airplane passengers at risk

TikTok, the world's most downloaded app, accumulates over one billion video views daily and is full of viral moments. Chances are, even if you don't actively use it, you've read or heard about one of its trends. But it's not all positive. A new TikTok 'travel hack' has sparked concern among experts. The videos, which have amassed millions of views, show airplane passengers pulling their knees to their chest, placing their feet on the seat's edge, and securing their seatbelts around their ankles—allowing them to rest their heads on their knees. This hack is "extremely dangerous," according to Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. She told CNN Travel that seatbelts are designed to sit low and tight across the passenger’s lap to protect them during turbulence, emergency landings, or accidents. She also added that improper buckling can put others at risk during turbulence. Furthermore, this hack increases the risk of blood clots and legal trouble, as it violates federal regulations and crew instructions. Willful refusal can result in fines of up to US$35,000. With over one billion users worldwide and 170 million in the US alone, TikTok continues to raise significant safety concerns. Explore this gallery to learn more about the risks and how to protect yourself.

The surprising history of the oldest mountains in the world

Mountains are some of the oldest residents of our planet. Earth's ancient temples of strength and resilience, sometimes taking the form of massive jagged fingers reaching for the sky, other times gently rounded and rolling hills giving texture to the land's surface, have watched over the earth for millions of years before complex organisms began to develop. For instance, the Appalachian Mountains, today famous for their heavily forested slopes, are around 500 million years older than the first trees that ever sprouted from the earth. These ancient formations are not only beautiful, but also tell the story of the world in its earliest stages, stories worth telling and worth reading. Intrigued?
